Week of 27 May, 2012 - Air
Literacy: Airplanes non-fiction book; air travel role play; "I'm a Little Airplane" song
Phonics: Short U (as in "umbrella")
Math: Transportation 1:1 counting and numeral identification; building 3D structures
Science: Hot air balloons over Dubai (video and inquiry)
Art: Papier mache hot air balloons; working on our Reading Fair display.



Week of 20 May, 2012 - Land
Literacy: Go, Dog, Go; Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!; All Aboard; "Wheels on the Bus"; transportation-themed non-fiction.
Phonics: Short O (as in "octopus")
Math: On and Off the Bus game (addition and subtraction); How Many Wheels? (pre-multiplication skills); building 3D structures.
Science: Will it roll? (creating ramps and racing cars)
Art: "Car Scenes" shape exploration


Week of  13 May, 2012 - Water
Literacy: "Row, Row Your Boat" song and game; naming different types of boats (dhow, sailboat, ship, yacht).
Phonics: Gg (as in go or grass).
Math: Transportation-themed counting; building 3D structures.
Science: Sink or Float exploration; water table sensory play.
Art: Paper chain anchors; making a dhow; letter G projects.


UNIT: Under the Sea


Week of 6 May, 2012 - Beach
Literacy: At the Seaside book with Story Tray (labeling beach-themed objects).
Phonics: Dd (Jolly Phonics Book 2)
Math: Adding fish; matching quantities by adding scoops to ice cream cones.
Science: Making a Cartesian Diver; ice cream taste test.
Art: Making sea creatures (jellyfish, squid) for a mural; doodling on doilies for the letter D.


Week of 29 April, 2012 - Sea Life
Literacy: Rainbow Fish role play; What's It Like to Be a Fish?; additional ocean-themed books. (See Math for more Literacy tie-ins.)
Phonics: Rr (Jolly Phonics Book 2)
Math: Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert (counting book); "Five Little Fish" fingerplays; simple addition, subtraction, and matching activities using seashells and Goldfish crackers.
Science: Ocean-in-a-bottle activity; finding sea shells and magnetic numbers in the sand.
Art: Sponge paint coral reef; cardboard fish to use in retelling of Fish Eyes.

Literacy: Stars; "I'm a Little Magnet" song; shadow puppet storytelling
Phonics: Mm (Jolly Phonics Book 2)
Math: "Go Fish" magnetic counting game; Earth Olympics recycling sort; comparing magnets
Science: Exploring magnets (Is It Magnetic? and How Strong is this Magnet?); creating a magnetic marble run; light and shadow on the projector
Art: Using marbles to paint letter M; making silhouettes


Week of 15 April, 2012 - Liquids, Solids, and Gases
Literacy: Stars; making lab notebooks; shared reading and writing using recipes and other instructions
Phonics: Hh (Jolly Phonics Book 2)
Math: Exploring before and after events; comparing quantities using "Capacity Man"
Science: Making rock candy; color-changing milk experiment; liquid density; water xylophone; film canister rockets
Art: Bubble and marble paintings; letter "H" project


Week of 8 April, 2012 - Colors & Color Mixing
Literacy: Press Here and Mouse Paint; making color word flip books; following instructions and recording a scientific process
Phonics: Review (S, A, T, P, N, I, C, K, and E)
Math: Comparing length using rainbow strips; graphing Smarties by color
Science: Color Mixing and "Baking Soda Spoons"
Art: Dot collages; color mix handprints; writing in a rainbow

Math: Comparing equal sets
Science: Habitats of farm animals; "What's inside this egg?" exploration.
Art: Horse portraits, egg pictures with the letter Ee


Week of 26 February, 2012 - Living and Non-Living
Literacy: Reading Owl Babies; looking at parts of a tree
Phonics: k-k-k kicking "Kk"
Math: Ordering by size using owls; counting objects 1 to 10
Science: Sorting living and non-living items
Art: Making owls, nests, and kites
